The steerer tube on a conventional headtube bike flexes inside the headtube as well- perhaps not as freely, but not just above the upper bearing as Dan says.
I'll just keep on riding my 6 year old bike. The funny thing is that it gets more compliant every season ;-) The first carbon bikes used to be softer, than they make them stiffer and now they're making them softer again. Man, the industry doesn't know what to invent next to get into peoples pocket books. Just like disposable razor blade. First there was one single blade, than 2, 3 and now up to 6 ! But the novelty for next year is going to be the incredible 1 blade !
It's funny that Simon says that Trek wouldn't endorse a 32 tyre and here we are nearly 1 year later and guess what tyre they have running on the Domane from their catologue ... 700x32c
compliance noun 1. the action or fact of complying with a wish or command. "the ways in which the state maintains order and compliance" 2. PHYSICS the property of a material of undergoing elastic deformation or (of a gas) change in volume when subjected to an applied force. It is equal to the reciprocal of stiffness. I had to look it up. I knew only the first meaning. So I was a bit confused.
One thing you forgot to mention is how the ISO Speed sensors affect the positioning of the seat. How much lower can the seat drop and still have the minimum vertical compliance for bumpy roads?
I like this bike but I'm wondering how will the ISO decoupler adjuster thingy will stand the test of time. Will it be a maintenance nightmare? Also, since the whole seat tube is "removable" (in a way), I'm wondering if the bike is a structurally durable as a "regular" bike. Pricing for the Di2 Ultegra is atractive, if I get a positive feel for how this bike will age, I might pull the trigger.
Anyone have any idea how the change in vertical compliance in the front end would affect the stiffness of the front end during a sprint? Would you lose power?
Everyone's trying to build compliance into their frames and we have Cannondale saying "Fuck it, smack on a lefty fork on that road bike and give it a mtb wheelset"
But the design of that decoupler buts the pivotpoint at the centre of that (huge, and massively over engineered) cartridge bearing about an inch lower than it was before? Which, by the way, is an unsupported part of the carbon steerer tube. The top of the steerer (where you guys say it usually flexes) is strengthened by the expander wedge. In a few years' time, I can imagine a massive recall on these for failed steerer tubes or even head tubes. Anyway, I always thought it was the LEG of the forks that flexed to give comfort, hence the curved forks with dfferent offsets for different styles of roadbike.HUGE gimmick, which still wasn't quick enough to beat a proper standard road bike (A Spesh Tarmac with minimal adjustment for cobbles) at flanders....
Corey Horning Jack of all trades master of none springs to mind. Something that doesn't specialise will compromise. Unless this is somehow the exception to the rule.
probably a good bike if you are an original owner with the warranty, who only owns it for a couple years before moving on to something else. on the other hand, some poor sap who buys one of these frames second-hand that is several years old, I see lots of issues...
lord almighty, it was pouring in london this afternoon lmao, so as i was cycling i was just ploughing through the rain and roads lmao, but got soaked quite a bit, also thanks to my cycling kit i the wetness didn't really affect me, so yh =)
Why is it pronounced Doh-ma-knee rather than Doh-main? The Mad-own is not pronounced Mad-own-knee, and I mean, Trek is an American company and should be used to people being incapable of pronouncing things that are not "normal". Spesch should be used to the All-esz, the same way Shimano doesn't care whether De-ore is pronounced De-or-eee or Ult-ē-gra is pronounced Ul-tea-gra.
A Trek user discussion : "I got a new Madone because I broke my front caliper flap" "That sucks, I had to changed my Domane, steering bearings was worned"
Love the robot-kind voice of Si when talking through the cobbles sector!
The disk models come with 32 tyre as stock actually. Such a nice ride.
I have the 2018 and its so sweet. You feel the bumps in the pedals but not in the seat or the bars. Great for super long rides. Great review guys.
One of the best pro bike videos!
As you know, we don't do reviews here on GCN. Until now.
Whoah if you watch Si's front wheel at 4:48, you can actually see the fork moving (the wheel doesn't move as it should). So I guess it's not a gimick.
if you listen real close at the last 5 seconds someone rides by and says "Hey, GCN alright".
IsoSpeed works!
Love it on my Boone 9 Disc!
Had a look at one of these today (the white/orange and the black/red one). You can feel the flex but not had a ride on it yet. Lovely bit of tech.
So much for installing a motor in the seat post tube...
The steerer tube on a conventional headtube bike flexes inside the headtube as well- perhaps not as freely, but not just above the upper bearing as Dan says.
It's nice, good enough for 2nd place in Flanders.
Shout out to "Cannondany" and his awesome bike reviews
Nice opening.

Love the move to space for larger tyres.
I'd love an endurance bike with space for 40c tyres --- a few exist like the Ridley X-Trail.
Five years later.
Domane: your wish is granted
It's funny that Simon says that Trek wouldn't endorse a 32 tyre and here we are nearly 1 year later and guess what tyre they have running on the Domane from their catologue ... 700x32c
Failed to answer the main question I instantly had when seeing this lovely bike, why is it in Team Sky colours?
compliance
noun
1.
the action or fact of complying with a wish or command.
"the ways in which the state maintains order and compliance"
2.
PHYSICS
the property of a material of undergoing elastic deformation or (of a gas) change in volume when subjected to an applied force. It is equal to the reciprocal of stiffness.
I had to look it up.
I knew only the first meaning.
So I was a bit confused.
When will you make a video for the new Trek Domane 2020?
I really wish GCN did do reviews
Will the frame in this video be sold on Trek Website? I really like it , it's just so pretty.
Nice bike and pleased overall
One thing you forgot to mention is how the ISO Speed sensors affect the positioning of the seat. How much lower can the seat drop and still have the minimum vertical compliance for bumpy roads?
make more spin classes please :D
On my page got a geeky vid on this bike. Shameless plug.
Such a great bike! But it starts off at 5k here in the U.S. Ill have stick with my Emonda ALR.
Just for our edification: why do you not do reviews? Seems a useful thing
Sponsored
They're inherently political and contentious.
+Timothy Bates They are sponsored by companies. It's like I pay you money to do a review on my bike, audience won't believe in you.
Does the new steerer prevent Si from getting the stem in the right position?
"We don't do reviews here on GCN"... Proceeds to do a review.
If i leave my bike unserviced all winter I can normally get about 14mm of vertical and horizontal compliance in my wheel and headset bearings.
Black and blue? Since when do Trek sponsor Team Sky? :p
+Shaun The Penguin Cracking toast avatar!
+Shaun The Penguin If you can't beat them, might as well duplicate them.
It's called "SLR" and it has adjustable "ISO speed". Are you sure it's actually a bike and not a camera?
+beeble2003 It's like being shot from a Canon!
+Dan Morgan *grooaaaan* Nice one.
Cant wait till the day that GCN gives out a Trek Domane SLR as a free bike.
i think we have a branding issue here.
- has anyone asked Dave Brailsford about this?
I would like to see some reviews. you don't have to rank them, just give us your thoughts. don't let bike radar out do you
Seems like you guys are sponsored by every major bike company.
Giant? Specialized? Camp? Fuji? Orbeca? Cannyon? Eff off ignoramus.
I guess it's good if I could change bikes for every course or ride I do.
Remember the days when all the talk was how the carbon lay up and geometry in parts of the frame made it more comfortable.....boy those were the days.
HERE TAKE MY MONEY!
Why don't you do reviews? I think that would be a good improvement.
I like this bike but I'm wondering how will the ISO decoupler adjuster thingy will stand the test of time. Will it be a maintenance nightmare? 'As you all know we don't do reviews on GCN.' why not wtf?
Bias?
+etobiCRACKscorpions might lose their sponsors
Anyone have any idea how the change in vertical compliance in the front end would affect the stiffness of the front end during a sprint? Would you lose power?
Everyone's trying to build compliance into their frames and we have Cannondale saying "Fuck it, smack on a lefty fork on that road bike and give it a mtb wheelset"
I have yet to see a Slate in a pro race. Or amateur road race, for that matter.
So effectively there's just more vertical compliance.
+smshdchrb effectively
Can i get this color without the flexy bits? Really nice.
Is the Madone next? I hope so.
Any guesses on an emonda disc later this season?
SLAM THAT STEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
quite unsettling watching the bars flex like that in si's hands, and the forks bending on the cobbles
+James Heath that's what they're designed to do
that's what uts tests are for !
I'm so glad they stopped doing that silly rear brake thing.
The new trek madon
How do you determine the stiffness of the frame?
Whats that sound toward the end of the video.. sound like something got stuck in the bicycle spokes.
This thing is going to be a garage queen for a creak here and a creak there on every other day ; talk about complicating things.
how come there's not many review videos on cipollini nk1k around
$$$$$
Is that the bike that caused Spartacus to crash out?
Them cages; what are they? Bontragers?

Would the domane be like race legal?
First impression....
look like a Pinerello Bikes
Phew. Confirmation that Dan's announcement was April fools😶
what about power transfer?
Trek says - doe-MAH-nee
2017 Team SKY Team Bike ?
How did Simon break his neck
are those hydraulic disk brakes?
+jeremy emilio They better be for 10 grand.
10% more comfort. Uh... How do you measure that?
+Timothy Fish 10% fewer sores on one's a$$?
+Timothy Fish Ask their ass
Is it really DOMANE with "ee" at the end? Always thought it's pronounced like domain;p cheers!
We may have got it wrong - pronunciation has never been our strong point!
GCN got it right!
Yep, Do - mah - knee. Like its italian.
lol and now Trek specs 700x32 tires on these bikes
just find a steel frame bike with 28mm tyres then u'll be good.
Si, it sounds like you're riding a massage chair down those cobbles.
so the million dollar question. Is it the best bike on the market?
+experiment54 I'm thinking with the compliance, adjustability. This will be the best all around bike for recreational riders or Cat 4+ riders.
Corey Horning middle aged men and women then?
+experiment54 oh no, anyone that just enjoys riding. You can take this on crushed stone trail, back onto the road.
Corey Horning Jack of all trades master of none springs to mind. Something that doesn't specialise will compromise. Unless this is somehow the exception to the rule.
+experiment54 For sure, I could see that being it. Only one way to find out. Test it and test all the features
Dan has been ditched by dimension data
probably a good bike if you are an original owner with the warranty, who only owns it for a couple years before moving on to something else. on the other hand, some poor sap who buys one of these frames second-hand that is several years old, I see lots of issues...
So I guess the adjustable ISO can't be done on the fly?
+Yo-yo no, you're right, you have to stop and undo the bolt first.
+Global Cycling Network Adjusting the ISO while your riding will really cut into your KOM time!
+Global Cycling Network how much does IT cost?
+Gamer/failer 10 Here is the US pricing: www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/bikes/road-bikes/endurance-race-bikes/domane/c/B221
+Yo-yo after a few beers.
4:40 Wtf am I listening to a robot on a bike ??
Please say the word "compliance" more often please
Why is it using Sky color scheme?
+Rixter why not? it's not patented
+Dave I agree, not patented, just surprised they don't pick a scheme that matches their sponsored team
+Rixter this isn't a team bike, that one is available to the public
Nice bike what is the price?
+Big M 20000US$ or even more.. well its TREK.. :(
Expensive! Start at $5 grand in the states. Starting price in Canada on Trek website is almost $6500 CDN
Expensive! Start at $5 grand in the states. Starting price in Canada on Trek website is almost $6500 CDN
+Big M it'll vary depending on what kind of gear you have set up on it
Starts off at 5k.
are you guys now sponsored???
They have been for some time
anyone know a non disc roadbike where i can put on 28c or 30c tires for under 1500 $?
Interesting tech on that bike, now stop squabbling about who is going to ride the Sky look alike bike.
I normally love the high tech stuff, but this just isn't doing it for me.
lord almighty, it was pouring in london this afternoon lmao, so as i was cycling i was just ploughing through the rain and roads lmao, but got soaked quite a bit, also thanks to my cycling kit i the wetness didn't really affect me, so yh =)
pros will never use discs
May as well buy a steel as you've rubber between the carbon tubes ? - what's the sense of that...
There is no rubber. It's all steel and ball bearings. The silicone molding is what fills space to keep mud out.
thechosendude Ya don't say...
Too much GCN logo in one frame -__-
What exactly does "compliance" mean here? This is obviously a non standard english use of the term.
Compliance is a marketing buzz word... for flex.
Thank you for that. I have never heard that before.
The paint on that bike is so ugly but cool concept
#effectively
Si I think that the motor inside your frame has affected your brain because you sound like a robot.
cable tie..........
madone emonda domane whahahaha

"That sucks, I had to changed my Domane, steering bearings was worned"
Don't forget the BB90 issues too.
And just wait five years until these ISO frames are changing second or third hands with no warranty.
Anyone can sponsor this one for me? Sob...
yuck
